Nosotras/No sofras
2026
The title is a phonetic fold across two languages. "Nosotras" — we, in Spanish, feminine plural — sounds almost identical to "no sofras" — may you not suffer, in Spanish (no) and Portuguese (sofras). One sound and one wish: we, may we not suffer.
Three old handkerchiefs are sewn one after another into a continuous field of white fabric. At the center, the artist's own hair is woven into the fabric and arranged into a sigil; a pattern drawn from the body, forming a ritual claiming protection for the collective feminine.
On the ground below, a found tree root, shaped like a heart with its arteries, is adorned with silver ribbon. Silver, long associated with protection, wraps what is already alive with the weight of a vow. The work operates as a spell and as a banner, intimate in its making and communal in its address.
